Example construction engineering cover letter - free sample

Here is a sample employment cover letter which I wrote recently in response to an ad for a job as a construction engineer in one of our local papers. As you can see it makes reference to the ad as well as the enclosed cv/resume. You can customise it to suite your situation and write your own cover letter.

Joroman Lees Construction Engineering
200 Citegrove Avenue
New York City
NY 10101

Dear Mrs Rebecca Foster,

I wish to apply for the post of Trainee Assistant Construction Engineer as advertised in a recent edition of The Modern Construction Engineer Magazine. I have recently completed a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) Degree in Civil Engineering at Princeton University and a one-year placement with Balfour Beatty as part of my training.

I enclose my CV/resume which outlines my academic and work experience. As you can see, I have had comprehensive training and experience in Civil Engineering and I believe that this has developed many of the skills you have stated in your advertisement. My course has enabled me to gain knowledge and understanding of Civil Engineering, Building technology and Constructionas well as risk assessment techniques, legal and regulatory framework, health and safety and management.

My one-year placement with Balfour Beatty has helped me develop my team-work, communicational, organisational, report writing and research skills and has also exposed me to various projects including highways, bridges, reservoirs, dams, airports, railroads and buildings. My CV demonstrates the variety of work in the construction sector and the skills that I feel I have gained whilst in this employment. My academic skills have given me the ability to communicate effectively on paper as well as through presentations. Through work experience I have also learned to communicate with people at various levels and in situations which require tact.

Having visited your website and read your brochure, I feel that Bresmans Construction will offer me a challenging and rewarding career as a Construction Engineer.

I would welcome the opportunity to talk to you about a career with Joroman Lees Construction and I hope that you will invite me for a visit to discuss this matter soon.

Yours truly,

Iwe Nikukonda

This is just a smaple letter but I hope you've noticed that the person applying is coming straight from university and is capitalising on the limited experience that they have gained so far. When writing job application cover letters remember that it's not only what you say that's important but also how you say it!

By the way, English is not my first language so feel free to critique the grammar.

A decent cover letter is key. My civil engineering firm is being inundated with resumes and cover letters from engineers looking for jobs in civil engineering right now. Although times are slow, we never ignore good talent and the cover letter is the first sign of that.

Always double check you have the right company name and spelling; it happens surprisingly often with this cover letter being a perfect example (2nd last paragraph says Bresmans instead of Joroman Lees)
